Search Tips
Keyword Search
To perform a keyword search, use either the Quick Search bar, or the Keyword Search page. Below you will find some useful tips for keyword searching.
Searching for Multiple Words
To search for multiple words, simply enter each word, seperated by a space.
Example: wise men
The above search would return any verse containing both the word wise and men, though the words can appear seperately anywhere in the verse.
Searching for an Exact Phrase
To search for an exact phrase, enter a phrase, enclosed in quotes. You can search for multiple words and phrases at the same time.
Example # 1: "wise men"
Example # 2: "in the beginning" god
Example # 3: "in the beginning" "god created"
Restrict by Word or Phrase
To find phrases that do not contain a word or phrase, prefix the unwanted word(s) or phrase(s) with a minus sign. Verses with this word or phrase will not be included in the search results.
Example # 1: "in the beginning" -god
Example # 2: wise -men
Example # 3: "in the beginning" -"god created"
Wildcard Search
To search for derivatives of a word, verse, or pattern, enter a * where you want the loose pattern matching to occur.
Example # 1: stone*
Example # 2: *stone
Example # 3: sto*e
Example # 4: *sto*e*
In the examples above, the first search would return verses with stone, stones, and stoned. The second example would return verses with stone, brimstone, and millstone. The third example would return verses with the word stone, store, and stole. The last example would return verses with a diverse range of words, including stopped, stolen, and restored.
Chapter Search
To perform a chapter search, either use the Quick Search bar or the Chapter Search page.
Search for Chapter
To search for a specific chapter of a specific book within the bible, enter the book name (i.e. Genesis) followed by the chapter number. The book name must be spelled correctly, or a match will not be found. (If you do not know how to spell the book name, please use the Chapter Search page.)
Example # 1:John 5
Example # 2:1 John 5
Please note that the two examples above are different, as there is both a "John" and a "1 John" book within the bible.
